The Block episode 27 & 28 recap: Omar and Oz’s reveal sexy plan for living room, Tom admitted to hospital

It was a week of bad weather and even badder moods as the contestants struggled with what seemed to be an insurmountable amount of work.

Not only were they being expected to renovate their vast living and dining areas in subzero temperatures, but they had to make over a house for charity.

However, the additional project brought plenty of feel-good moments when the challenge house renovation was revealed to Tyler, Tim and their families.

All five teams worked hard to give these young men with special needs a home that was tailor made for them and that showcased their interests.

Darren Palmer judged the teams’ efforts and decided that Rachel, Ryan, Sarah-Jane and Tom had done the best job. They were given a $10,000 to share between them.

That money would come in handy for Ryan and Rachel, in particular, who were yet to win anything and been struggling to claw back funds since accidentally blowing their budget in the first week.

To boost their confidence, Darren also dropped in to offer them some styling advice.

Not that they needed it. They seemed to be one of the few teams who had a very clear vision for their space and were on target to actually get the job done.

Hosts Scott Cam and Shelley Craft were likewise impressed by Ryan and Rachel’s efforts, pointing out that their 5m-long, 10-seater couch was far more practical for a huge holiday escape than Sarah-Jane and Tom’s three-seater couch and armchair.

The pair were also enthusiastic about their stone fireplace and feature ceilings.

“I am not a fan of flooring on the ceiling, but you pulled it off,” Scott said after surveying their wood-panelled ceiling.

Rachel, who has spent the last few weeks being bogged down by insecurity and disappointment after a stream of negative feedback from the judges, seemed in a far more positive frame of mind in hell week.

“It’s been a rollercoaster but now we are just going to enjoy it,” Rachel said.

She needed to have a word with Tom, who was in a slump, telling everyone within earshot that the job was too big and they would not be able to finish this week.

Far from being sympathetic, a fed-up Sarah-Jane dubbed her husband “Debbie Downer.”

“Or “Negative Nancy” or “Sensitive Sally” or “Moody Michelle,” she added.

“I may have to do a Chopper Reed and got my ears off, so I don’t have to listen to it,” she scoffed.

In fairness, it hasn’t been a great week for poor old Tom.

“Get f****d’: What made Rachel explode

He had been trying to work with an increasingly swollen and painful finger until foreman Keith spotted the injury and sent Tom off to hospital.

He didn’t tell Sarah-Jane where he was going and when she found out she didn’t bat an eye, explaining Tom was a frequent visitor to the emergency room.

“I used to worry, but now I do it like a school drop off and tell him to get an uber home,” she laughed.

“Everyone thinks I am a bitch. I do love the man. I do value his finger I don’t want him to lose it forever.”

Tom’s finger had been feeling “a bit sore” for a few days and an ultrasound revealed he had an 8mm shard of glass wedged inside it.

The doctors gave him some antibiotics and told him to return at a later date for surgery.

Despite his injury and downcast mood, Sarah-Jane and Tom do have a pretty healthy kitty of cash thanks to their back-to-back wins.

The same could not be said for Sharon and Ankur, who were $30,000 in the red and therefore looking for anywhere they could to cut costs, even if that meant chopping their stone feature fireplace in half.

The couple have also shrewdly decided to use their Suncorp game-changer funds to erect a market garden.

Give they didn’t have any cash to do any landscaping beyond their victory tree, they will need all the help they could get to beautify the substantial outdoor areas.

Interestingly, Jenny and Dylan have also yet to taste victory but have somehow avoided being in as much of a financial hole as Sharon and Ankur.

That doesn’t mean they’re not hungry for a win.

Desperate to finally come up with a showstopper that will give them the winning edge, Jenny and Dylan called in a mate from the Gold Coast to create a Venetian plaster feature wall.

It became a family affair for the Gold Coast couple too.

They pair enlisted Jenny’s architect sister to create a tiny house, using their Suncorp game-changer money.

The one-bedroom studio would be built off site and towed in on a trailer by her mum with Dylan’s mother riding shotgun.

The happy family reunion was momentarily spoiled when the trailer got bogged. The incident gave the Queensland mums some insight into the wet weather conditions their kids were facing while renovating a farmhouse in Victoria in the winter.

The cold conditions couldn’t dampen Omar and Oz’ spirits. The pair’s grand plans for their living and dining area included a baby grand piano and a roaring fireplace.

“Honestly, we just want a lot of places where you can make love,” they told the somewhat surprised heater salesman.

If that’s the case, the other teams better hope Omar and Oz’s room comes with some decent blinds.
